About the Self-Determined Career Development Model
The information on this website grew out of a five-year Special Demonstration Project grant from the Rehabilitation Services Administration. The Self-Determined Career Development Model was developed in a collaborative effort between Kansas Rehabilitation Services and a group of researchers focusing on self-determination at Kansas University under the direction of Dr. Micheal Wehmeyer. Research shows that self-determined people achieve more positive employment outcomes.
The Self-Determined Career Development Model was designed to provide people with disabilities the knowledge and skills they need to compete for jobs they want with the potential for career advancement, higher wages, and benefits. The Self-Determined Career Development Model’s purpose is to build capacity of employment service providers to enhance consumer self-determination in order to better identify their job and career goals, develop an action plan to achieve those goals and to evaluate and modify that plan. With increased self-determination skills, people with disabilities will self-direct their vocational planning and decisions related to career changes with less reliance upon service systems.
Materials developed by this project and provided on this web site have been used by consumers across the country. Consumers are assisted in using the model by a variety of model facilitators. While a consumer may use the model without a facilitator, materials have been designed for consumer use with the support of a facilitator.
This tutorial should be viewed as an initial step in using the Self-Determined Career Development Model. As mentioned above, consumers may use the model without a facilitator. However anyone who wishes to increase their knowledge and skills in facilitating self-determination and consumer self-direction of their vocational planning and decision making are encouraged to complete this knowledge based tutorial.
This tutorial should be viewed as an initial step in using the Self-Determined Career Development Model. If you have further questions or want more information about the Self-Determined Career Model, this website contact Dr. George Gotto: firstname.lastname@example.org.
